Yoga For Inner and Outer Beauty

Sometime back I read an anecdote concerning Bill and Hillary Clinton. It seems that one time, many years ago, Hillary dragged Bill to a yoga class. Bill remarked that he was the only man in the class. In many countries, that is the way it is, with women being the primary enthusiasts at yoga classes. One of the main reasons for this may be that yoga is seen as a way to lose weight and become more beautiful. Let's take a look at this and see what role yoga has to play in making someone look beautiful.

No doubt yoga can help a person to become healthy, and fit. If someone practices the postures, does meditation, and follows the yogic prescriptions for eating, sleeping, hygiene and exercise it is almost certain that he or she will end up in great shape and look better.

In fact, our concept of beauty is in large part biological and part of the evolutionary process. Clear skin complexion, for example, is an indicator of good health and for our ancient ancestors it made good sense to choose partners who were healthy and could pass on their genes to future generations.

However the beauty of a person is not just based on physical factors alone. Just as internal physical factors, such as digestion and the proper functioning of physical organs, are reflected in the outer look of a person, there are internal psychic and spiritual factors that play a big role in how we feel and how others see us.

Although the physical practices of yoga, such as yoga postures (asanas) are the best known part of yoga, at the heart of yoga is a moral code which defines a way of life in which a person can live in harmony with herself and with society. This set of lifestyle instructions is know as Yama and Niyama.

Yama which means hat which controls has five parts and the main function of these five practices is to help an individual achieve harmony with his or her external environment. One of the most important parts of Yama is a practice known as Satya.

Satya is loosely defined as ruth but in fact there is no exact English equivalent for this term. In his book A Guide to Human Conduct, my guru Shrii Shrii Anandamurti defines satya as action of mind and right use of words in the spirit of welfare. That is, we should do whatever we can to promote the welfare of others, by keeping good thoughts in mind and by speaking in the spirit of helping others.

Someone who practices satya and always keeps positive thoughts in mind develops will power and straightforwardness. This practice is actually going on in the subconscious mind, and results in an internal effulgence or glaze known as Ojas. This inner effulgence is expressed outwardly as a vigor that definitely contributes to the attractiveness of a person. If you practice satya you will achieve a glow that cannot be duplicated or achieved with any kind of makeup!

When you are twenty years old you are helped out by Mother Nature, as the hormones of your body are helping you to blossom and enter your years of peak physical well-being. However, this help from Nature is not indefinite and also must be supported by a proper way of life.

If you practice the outer aspects of yoga (postures, diet, fasting, hygiene) then you will be able to make the most of what God has given to you in the way of a physical body. If you practice the inner aspect of yoga (meditation and balanced conduct) you will bring forth an inner effulgence and beauty that will remain with you long after you physical body begins to wind-down.'

Yoga

Yoga traditionally conjures up images of long hair, loin cloths and incense burning in a darkened room with strange music playing! It had an almost cultish persona. Nowadays your gran is quite likely to tuck her Yoga mat under her arm and head on down to the local gym for an hour of Yoga and meditation. Yoga is coming out of the darkened room and is being embraced in it many forms by old and young alike.

Yoga originated in India. It is considered one of the most ancient forms of self-improvement exercise in history. Yoga was formally documented around 200BC by one of India's most famous Yoga masters, Patanjali, who wrote the 'Yoga Sutras'.

Traditionally though, the ancient art of Yoga is passed down from Master to student and so on.However, throughout the years, Yoga has undergone many changes and new streams of Yoga have been developed from the original sources.

Also, during history, when India was invaded, many texts that
documented Yoga techniques and teachings were destroyed. It was not until the early 1900 century that Yoga was revived by Yoga
Master Tirumalai Krishamacharya, known as a 'Yogi'. Following this time, Yoga began to become a World Wide exercise that has since been embraced by millions of people as a way of life.

Essentially, traditional Yoga is made up of eight limbs that represent ethics, the physical body, breathing, consciousness, concentration, meditation and God. There are also five 'Yamas', which a 'Yogi', Yoga teacher, must adhere to, which are, non-violence, truthfulness, non-stealing, fidelity to God and non-grasping, meaning not being attached to material possessions.

Yoga For Weight Loss

Many people claim that yoga helps with weight loss. However, there is no hard and fast scientific data to support this claim. Everyone acknowledges that yoga helps stretch the muscles and increases flexibility and limberness, but now people are claiming that you can use yoga for weight loss.

It may be hard to understand how yoga can help you lose weight, but studies have shown that people who practice yoga do lose weight. The weight loss is probably not the result of burning calories through strenuous exercise, because most yoga exercise is not that strenuous. Most people believe the weight loss is a result of reducing stress and learning to avoid bad habits that lead to overeating. By reducing stress, yoga helps you lose weight.

Any exercise that helps you get fit and in shape will help you lose weight. Also, by helping you reduce stress in your life, yoga helps eliminate destructive habits which lead to overeating, which in turn helps you lose weight. Yoga is very effective at reducing stress in your life, and a person living a stress free life tends to have fewer self sabotaging bad habits like compulsive overeating.

There may not be a proven medical link for weight loss through yoga, but this doesnt mean that yoga isnt beneficial. Yoga contributes to your general well being through stress reduction and flexibility. It may be that weight loss from yoga is a result of the other benefits that come from yoga.

Regardless of what individual facet causes it, you can use yoga for weight loss. It may not be the only thing in your life that results in weight loss, and it may not be the fastest way to lose weight, but there are few things in life that have as many positive benefits for you as yoga does. I guess that you can think of using yoga for weight loss as a nice, additional bonus!

Free Yoga Exercise Online

One of the greatest things about the internet you can find almost anything online. You can use the internet to find free yoga exercise poses and routines that will help you learn more about yoga.

If you are just starting out in yoga, then finding yoga exercises online is a great way to learn how effective yoga is at relieving stress and gaining flexibility. You can learn the basic poses and terminology so that when you do take a class, you will understand what to expect from your training class.

As with all things you find on the internet, you need to take what you learn with a grain of salt. If all the free information you find about yoga exercise describes one particular pose one way, and another article describes the same pose a different way, assume the one is incorrect and the majority is right.

Another benefit of learning about yoga online, you dont have to go to the gym, you dont have to worry about what you are wearing (is it trendy enough), and you can work out at your own pace. You dont even need to shave your legs before you start you yoga exercise routine.

Also, with yoga exercise training you find online, you can back up and repeat an exercise if you dont get it right the first time. One of the biggest benefits, it is free. But remember, you get what you pay for.

Based on all these reasons, I strongly recommend taking advantage of the free yoga exercise classes and techniques that you find online.
